History of the Restoration Project
History of the Restoration Project
From 1999 to 2001, excavation around the area of Hakone Sekisho took place. The consistency of the evidence among the sites and the facts in the historical materials have been confirmed. The first buildings to be restored were Obansho, Kamibankyusokusho, Umaya, Secchin, and Kyoguchigomon. This area was opened to the public in April 2004. The reconstruction of Tomibansho, Ashigarubansho, Edoguchigomon, Ashigarubanshosecchin, the stone walls stretching from Kyoguchigomon to Lake Ashi, and the stone walls along the slope of Kyoguchisennindamari commenced shortly thereafter. Historic Cedar Avenue was also restored during this time. The project was fully completed and Hakone Sekisho was opened to the public in the spring of 2007.
